I SPY - The importance of ‘play’

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

We all know that fun activities (play) keep you feeling young and energetic. By incorporating play into our daily interactions, we can improve the quality of our life - building strong and healthy relationships that positively shape us. Whilst it is important to develop early learning skills for younger children, it is also beneficial for people of all ages. Play keeps us functional, creates a better atmosphere (with fun and humour), creates healthier habits (encourages individuals to take regular breaks from tasks or stressful moments), and essentially helps us to develop and improve our social skills (communication, trust, working together, interaction, cooperation, conflict resolution, creative thinking), our behaviours, and boost productivity and innovation. Play (i.e. fun activities) can add joy and vitality to life (share fun and laughter), improve brain function (challenge the brain, stimulate your imagination and problems solving exercises), relieve stress (release feel good hormones, and help you loosen up in stressful situations), nurture relationships (through shared moments and your connection to others), and form new relationships (make new friends or business relationships). An activity that never gets old and is always fun, and can be played by people of all ages, at any time, is – I SPY (instructions on how to play below). It’s one of our all-time favourites.

I spy

From Wikipedia

One player is chosen to be the Spy, and they silently select an object that is visible to all the players. They do not announce their choice, and instead say, "I spy with my little eye something beginning with...," naming the letter the chosen object starts with (e.g. "I spy with my little eye something beginning with C" if the chosen object is a car).

Other players then have to guess the chosen object. Traditionally players ask directly about particular possibilities ("Is it a tree?"). Once a guesser has correctly identified the object, they become the Spy for the next round and the game starts again. If younger children are playing who are not so good at guessing, the role of Spy can be passed around in a set order.

The Spy cannot change the object once it has been chosen. The game relies on trust as the Spy is the only person who knows whether the guessers are correct or not.
