Intentionally engaging our senses

The five senses are our link to the world around us.

The five human senses are: hearing, touch, smell, taste, and sight. Our senses are our connection to the world around us - they help us to learn about our surroundings and to interact with other people.

Our five senses are incredibly powerful tools - they have the ability to calm our mind and body. Intentionally engaging our senses can provide instant healing or relief and bring us back into the present moment, the here-and-now and in reality. The technique known as ‘Grounding’ can be used as a coping mechanism and can be done in any environment. The grounding technique is a healing process that uses the five human senses to create sensations to help someone regain their mental focus from an intensely emotional state; it’s a practice that can help you pull away from flashbacks, unwanted memories, negative or challenging emotions, overwhelming feelings or intense anxiety, and refocus on what’s happening in the present moment.

Grounding exercises help you immediately connect with the present moment by distracting you from the thoughts in your mind. This is a coping strategy that is designed to "ground" you in, or immediately connect you with, the present moment.

To connect with the here and now, bring all your attention back to the present moment with this simple grounding exercise below '5-4-3-2-1 Calming Technique'. Be sure to keep your eyes open while you're grounding yourself so you're aware of everything that's going on around you.
